2006/2007 SYAC Travel Teams

Syosset, NY 29 June 2006--The Board of SYAC Girls Softball wishes to thank ther nearly 70 kids and their parents who came out for what was the first official Travel Team tryouts June 8-10, 2006.

As a result of these tryouts, Summer, Fall and Spring Travel Teams have now been picked. You can read the names of the kids on the summer team by clicking the appropriate link below:

SYAC Summer U10
The team playing this Summer will participate in the Glen Cove Tournament. The team is highly experimental in that a number of the kids on this team are a lot younger than the average U10 player so we await the outcome of their experience this summer and hope it will guide us to make the right decisions for the future of this program.

SYAC Fall/Spring U10

SYAC Fall/Spring U12

Travel softball is highly competitive, and rosters are limited in number by league rules. Players are selected based on skills demonstrated.

IF YOU WERE SELECTED FOR A TRAVEL TEAM...

  1. Indicate by telephone (364-8020) or email (rogermum@aol.com) that you are committing to play SYAC Travel Softball Fall/Spring 2006/2007.
  2. Mail a check for $300 made out to “SYAC Girls Softball” to SYAC, P.O. Box #953, Syosset, NY 11791. This fee is for the entire year. There are no refunds for partial year play.
  3. Practices will begin in the latter half of August. Games begin shortly after Labor Day. You will be contacted with details.

IF YOUR NAME IS NOT ON THE ROSTER...
You are a team alternate. You may be called to sub in a game, if needed, or possibly to join the team should a selected player drop out. The is no fee to be an alternate.

A WORD ABOUT “YOUNG TRAVEL PLAYERS”
At June tryouts, we were delighted to see a large turnout of girls interested in playing travel. Many applicants were one year younger (entering fourth grade) than the entry level that we anticipated for a new team. We have spent several weeks contacting competing clubs in nearby towns to try to determine if there will be appropriate competition for such a group of young players.

We have not been able to definitively determine that.

Accordingly, SYAC will not field a second U10 team at this time.

SYAC does not wish to raise hopes that can’t be fulfilled. Nor does SYAC wish to send out a group of young players who will have a negative experience in a league where other teams are as much as two years older and far more experienced.

SYAC very much encourages younger players to continue to practice, build skills and to try out again. Again, if you were not selected, please do not be discouraged from trying out again at a later date.

THANK YOU ALL FOR COMING OUT FOR SYAC TRAVEL!

Please note that in the Spring of 2007, the Fall U10 and U12 teams will move up a division (i.e., the U10 team will move up to U12 and the U12 team will move up to U14).

SYAC Travel teams compete in an ASA league where competition is keen. Players are selected based on skills demonstrated at tryouts. Cost for the year is $300, payable when teams are chosen. Doubleheaders are played, usually on Sundays, and players must commit to attending practices and skills clinics, as well.

A word about U14...

SYAC will not field a U14 travel team this fall. Girls who are high school aged are encouraged to play in the Fall Wesco League, which has U14, U16 and U18 divisions. Syosset High School softball coach Rich Powell will post a notice about these teams forming at the start of the school year.

All About the Travel League

Going forward, it is our intention to have Tryouts for Summer, Fall and Spring teams at approximately the same time they were held this spring (in the early part of June). Three sessions will be held and girls interested in playing on the teams must attend a minimum of two sessions. Applicants should bring a glove. Parents must sign a release form at tryouts.

Next Spring (2007), girls will have the option to pick the season in which they want to play "à la carte." Thus, if you'd like to play Summer and Spring, you'll sign up for that and those are the teams for which you'll be considered.

Most leagues and tournaments take place on weekends and doubleheaders are the rule.

While travel softball is definitely growing on Long Island, that growth is far from steady so it is difficult to say with certainty what each season will bring. It is entirely conceivable that we can create a team, start practicing and learn that there is no league in which it can play. We're doing everything we can to decrease that level of uncertaintly, but for the next few years, it will probably be a fact of life.

This past spring, there were not enough teams to have two distinct U10 and U12 leagues, so the NJBA combined them into one large U10-U12 league.

For Fall Ball, the ASA league begins after Labor Day and runs through early November. Games are generally played on Sundays and are usually doubleheaders. Games generally last about two hours each.

Unlike the long SYAC Spring Season, the short Fall ASA League is very competitive. As such, girls who really like to play and compete are urged to join. We know there is a lot of talent in this age group in our community, and we are again expecting to field a premier team with very experienced, quality coaches.  We can guarantee that your kids will learn and play at a much higher level than they have in the past.

Many girls play both SYAC Fall Travel Softball and soccer. We make every effort to see that our practice and game schedules do not conflict with soccer, but girls who want to play SYAC Travel Softball and also play soccer have to understand that both require serious commitment and carefully consider their decision to do both.
