Mr. Pickle wins 2008 Senior Championship
Syosset, NY 19 June 2008 With the game beginning on Wednesday and ending on Friday due to a rain delay, there was no shortage of exciting plays, strong pitching and clutch hits in the Senior league finals this week. Before a large crowd at the Park, Starr Strassman of Mr. Pickle and Danielle Zureck of Inhale Yoga were matching each other pitch for pitch as each team struggled to score runs against them.
Led by key hits from sisters Rachel and Sara Rubin, Caroline Checca, Rebecca Price and Strassman, Mr. Pickle was able to grab a lead of 4-1 on Wednesday evening before Inhale Yoga's hitters started to come alive. Inhale Yoga's attack, led by Arianna Fasano, Zureck, Rachel Weinstein and Julia Matlin was formidable, cutting the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the 4th inning before the skies opened up forcing ump extraordinaire Russ Huber have to postpone the balance of the game till Friday evening.
Mr. Pickle's defense proved to be impenetrable most of game, with Kayla Cohen steady at first base all game and the infield playing a flawlessly. The Pickle team scratched out another run in the top of the 6th on a perfectly placed bunt by Rachel Rubin who scooted all the way to third on an errant throw and scored on an infield hit moments later. Strassmann came out to pitch in the bottom of the sixth to shut down Inhale Yoga, stranding a runner on 3rd base to seal the win.
SYAC Commissioner Richie Levitan tries to stay "out of the picture" as umpire Russ Huber poses with team captains before coin toss. Later, a sudden torrential downpour left the game suspended to be continued Friday night.

Game Time rule clarified
Syosset, NY 22 May 2008--Senior League Commissioners Richie Levitan and Evan Friedman have issued a clarification regarding the following rule: "GAME TIME: Game time is 6:15pm. Start games as early as possible. A team must field at least seven (7) players by 6:40pm or forfeit."
"For the Senior League," said Richie, "Evan and I interpret it as follows:
A game should start as soon as both teams have at least 7 players. This should be as close to 6:15 as possible. If a team cannot field 7 players by 6:40, then they forfeit that game.
"Obviously it is important for [coaches] to emphasize to [their] players that punctionality is important. Hopefully this will clarify any misunderstandings regarding this rule.
TOBAY Councilwoman Walker tosses first pitch
6 May 2008, Syosset, NYThe Senior League finally got its 2008 season going Monday night with games at Thomas P. Longo Field and Hap Harris C. For details, click here. Tonight, My Funky Closet visits The Bicycle Planet in Syosset-Woodbury Park in the Park opener.

In the last row, standing behind players were the following adults:
Eric Cohen, coach; Umpire Russell Huber; Steve Heller, Gil Numeroff all of the SYAC Board of Directors; Herb Kaufman, honored catcher; Town Councilwoman Rosemarie Walker; coaches Bill Schess, Andy Targovnik and Alan Kaufman; and Senior League Commissioner Rich Levitan, SYAC Board of Directors.

Singer Holly Roselle performed "The Star Spangled Banner" before the first pitch.
Pitching has always been an issue in SYAC so we thought it fitting to have a powerful battery on hand to help us celebrate this event. Throwing out the first pitch at 6:15pm was to be Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto, but he was scratched at the last minute with dental problems. Councilwoman Rosemarie Walker (with red blouse, center right) graciously stepped in to take his place. The other half of that battery was Herb Kaufman, grandfather of Rachel and father of coach Alan on My Funky Closet (pictured to Ms. Walker's right), who rose the the occasion admirably.
Another one for the books...

Syosset, NY 21 June 2008--After an exciting finish to the Senior League Playoffs at Syosset-Woodbury Park last night, members of the Board of SYAC Girls Softball and the players and fans in attendance at the game pronounced 2008 one of our best seasons yet.

After the excitement died down last night, SYAC ace photographer Roger Mummert recorded a "rogues gallery" for posterity, including (left to right) Pony League Commissioner Gabe D'Auria, umpire Russ Huber, emeritus member Andy Lyman (rear), Travel Division Commissioner Bob Carton, SYAC President Gil Numeroff, Senior League Commissioner Richie Levitan and his Associate Commissioner Evan Friedman.
"Some people love to get out there and cream the other team," said SYAC president Gil Numeroff, "but for us, there's nothing like a lot of really close, well-played and exciting games, and the more of those we see, the better job we've done."
Indeed, a look at the playoff grids on each of the home pages for Pony, Junior and Senior leagues reveals that the Board's objectives for 2008 were more than adequately achieved. An exciting Junior League Championship ended Thursday night with a final score of 10-9. Last night's game ended 5-3 and even down in the Pony League, where high-scoring games are not unusual, one ended 36-35!
