Ground Balls

Ground balls are outs
Never commit an error under your glove

  • Feet shoulder width apart or wider
  • Toes parallel
  • Bend at waist and knees - back parallel to ground
  • Palm up
  • Clam hand
  • On balls of feet
  • No flipping
  • Reach for the ball
  • Field over forehead
  • See ball into glove
  • Bring chin to chest and ball to belly button
  • Footwork

Set position

  • Closer to the hitter the lower you get
  • Soft knees
  • Relax elbows
  • Balls of feet
  • Movement prior to pitch
  • Body at rest stays at rest; body in motion goes in motion
  • Watch contact zone

Fly Balls

  • Catch over throwing shoulder with two hands
  • Soft elbows
  • See the ball into the glove
  • Footwork
  • Catch ball moving toward target

Throwing technique

  • Short arc
  • Long arc
  • Bow and arrow
  • Grip
  • Thumb on back seam
  • 10 and 2 o'clock
  • Show target front shoulder
  • Thumb the ball
  • Pull front side
  • Elbow parallel to shoulder
  • Tuck chin to front shoulder
  • Ball past the ear--over the tiop
  • Release over the right eye
  • Thumb down to far hip
  • Relax arm and shoulder on release
  • Show target back shoulder
  • Release back side
  • Footwork

Reminders

  • Tuck your chin to your front shoulder
  • Rear shoulder passes through the front shoulder
  • Stretch your chest area
  • Hyper-extend your wrist
  • Burn ball off your fingers on wrist snap
  • Sequentially release the ball from the shoulder to the fingertips

Running Technique

  • Chin-Hip with hands
  • Arms at 90 degree angle
  • Punch forward and backward
  • Relax shoulders
  • Head still
  • Kick butt
  • Paw the ground
  • Elbows into body
