Here we are building resources for Coaches, with links to places on the web that tell coaches how to run practices or games, etc., as well as information from clinics we have held for our coaches.

This new section of our web site will present information you may have missed if you did not attend any of the Player Clinics, plus new information we find as it becomes available. |
Getting your daughter ready
To see--that is to experience--the clip above requires both QuickTime and patience. It is long but it is worth the several minutes it could take to appear on your screen. It is from 2004's Registration & Evaluation sessions, taken one of the three nights in January that it was held the HB Thompson Middle School Auxiliary Gym.
It shows what happens when the girls get inside, and clearly illustrates "what you're supposed to do when you get in there" for those unsure of themselves. And it should dispense once and for all with the mystery of what goes on when the door to the gym closes and your daughter disappears inside to another one of those places you can't follow her.
Get your daughter a pair of cleats
When this website went online in 2003,we said that cleats could be purchased in some places, like KMart, Modells or SportsAuthority for under $20.00 a pair. Unfortunately, that is no longer true. Some of those stores are no longer in our area, but more importantly, the price of cleats has gone up. It is worth noting that you can spend around as little as $30 to as much as hundreds of dollars on a pair of cleats, as this link clearly illustrates. But if you're paying that much, you're paying way too much, especially for younger girls whose feet are still growing. The important thing is that cleats will be better for them to pay in than sneakers.
They can even be purchased online at places like these (and we'll post more as we find them).

While we do lend girls baseball gloves during Evaluations, it's another thing during the regular season. Between now (end of February) and the beginning of the season (early April), get your daughter a good softball mitt if she doesn't already have one. A good glove is a bit more of an investment than a pair of cleats, but it should last a lot longer. Many of the same stores and sites named above are also excellent sources of these hand-sewn rawhide products our local kids love so much!
Another important tip for parents is to remember that girls softball is NOT a blood sport. We expect them to become good athletes and good sports before they can become winners.
The Syosset High School women's softball program has been working on their website. You'll be able to watch it evolve by clicking the banner below.
