Syosset, NY 16 June 2009—Finally Mother Nature decided to allow the Pirates (Team 1) to host Dugan's Sandwich Shop (Team 6) for the Championship matchup and finale of the 2009 SYAC Junior Girl's softball season. The Pirates took the field first and the bats of Marissa Levine, Sarah Solomon, Sydney Sable and Jenna Riech quickly produced runs for Dugan's Sandwich Shop girls. The Pirates took their turn at the plate with Jessica Joy, Rachael Burrei, and Sophia Henn putting their bats on the ball for the Pirates. Dugan's Stephanie Coundouris and Jenna Konsky lit up the scoreboard with fast bats and excellent base running. Katie Milas and Samantha Cocchi were unstoppable defensively for the Pirates. Isabel Henn and Alyssa Casale had some key hits for the Pirates while Dugan girls' defense play by Kayla Hickey, Jenna Riech and Jessica Klein wowed the spectators on both sides. The outstanding pitching dual between Dugan's Julianna Ventricelli and Pirate's Madison Ramírez caught the eyes of several recruiters in the stands and made their parents proud to have SYAC girls.
In a first-ever for SYAC Girls Softball, impending darkness resulted in the venue changing at the end of the fourth inning from the Thomas P. Longo Memorial Field at H.B. Thompson Middle School to "the Big Field" in Syosset-Woodbury Park to make use of the lights.
After the giant caravan, Dugan's Olivia Hynes and Ilyssa Glicksman stepped up to the plate and started to close the gap on the Pirates. In the top of the sixth, Pirate's Alexandra Garry and Hannah Tell wowed the spectators covering second base and making the force for a double play. The final out, a fundamental softball play at first base was executed unassisted by Pirate Danielle Jacoby to close the season. Pirates and Dugan's Sandwich Shop girls thank SYAC, all the people that make the league possible, and their parents for an excellent 2009 season! Story by Dave Garry. Photos by Roger Mummert.
About the Junior League... |
|
The Junior League is for girls who are in 4th or 5th grade as of January 1st. As in the Pony League, the games are also competitive, but unlike Pony League, Junior League pitching is done by the players. In setting up teams for the Junior League, we work hard to create balanced teams, rather than simply putting kids together with their friends, as we do when they're in our Instructional League. At this age, we strongly discourage parents from trying to get their children on the same teams as friends, for whatever reason. This is a competitive league, and, as such, fairness is a key to making it fun, and inclusive, for all kids. And in the course of playing a season in SYAC, strangers always become friends. The 2010 season is tentatively scheduled to begin on Monday, April 19, 2010. Registration and Evaluations take place in January. Once placed on a team, your child will be contacted by her coach sometime around the beginning of April. All games take place weeknights at 6:15pm and go until they end (6 innings) or it gets too dark or too cold to play. Cancellations due to inclement weather will be announced on the web on the home page and on this page and on the SYAC Girls Softball Weather Line (516) 733-4066. |
